The Royal Aeronautical Society Fedden Lecture
Aviation Oriented Atmospheric Research – Scope, Key Players, Status, Outlook
Under the umbrella of the Advisory Council for Aviation Research and Innovation in Europe (ACARE) the member states, the European Commission, industry, research establishments, and academia have joined forces to conceptualise the future of aviation. In an attempt to reconcile future industrial competitiveness with environmental issues and sustainability, the key challenges have been presented in the Flightpath 2050, Europe’s Vision for Aviation. One important requirement is to intensify atmospheric research to develop a prioritised environmental action plan and to establish global environmental standards. In this context, “aviation oriented atmospheric research” will highlight current efforts of the key players in the field, their infrastructure, and future needs to meet the challenges of the Flightpath 2050 in establishing an eco-efficient, sustainable aviation.
