Event details | | Title: Finding the Right Stuff: The Medical Selection of Aircrew and Astronauts Date: Tuesday, 24th March 2009 09:30 to Tuesday, 24th March 2009 17:30 Location: No.4 Hamilton Place, London W1J 7BQ, UK | | | Summary: In the early days of aviation, it was generally believed that the best predictor of success in flying training was the ability to ride a horse. However, it was soon realised that those engaged in civilian and military flying required not only an aptitude to do the job, but also the requisite medical fitness to withstand the flight environment, to fly safely and to be at least as reliable than the aircraft they were operating. Training of aviators requires significant financial investment, and organisations look for re-assurance that a trainee will return a reasonable length of service, and will not fail training for medical reasons.
This Symposium will explore the medical standards used in the selection of military aircrew, civilian aircrew and astronauts. Additionally, it will address some of the psychological aspects of aircrew selection including cognitive testing and the role of personality assessment.
