Helicopter Training Workstream

The Helicopter Training Workstream is developing a new manual on civil Helicopter Mission Training that will, when approved, become an ICAO Document.

Chair: Gordon Woolley OBE FRAeS

The Chair is Gordon Woolley OBE AFC FRAeS.   Gordon Woolley enjoyed a very varied 31 year career in the RAF, during which he was stationed in UK, Cyprus, Hong Kong and Germany, and flew in a wide variety of theatres.  He was awarded the Air Force Cross in 1977.  He led the UK Support Helicopter flights supporting both the NATO ACE Mobile Force and the UK Mobile Force.  He commanded the Chinook Squadron (Middle East) during operation Desert Storm, the first Gulf War, following which he was appointed OBE.  He is a graduate of the Air Warfare Commanders Course, and the Joint Service Defence College.  His last appointment was Group Captain Operational Doctrine and Training for the RAF Air Warfare Centre.  

In 1997, Gordon Woolley was recruited into the Medium Support Helicopter Aircrew Training Facility, spending the first two years with CAE Electronics, Montreal, as the MSHATF project development pilot and specialist support co-ordinator, overseeing development of the six full mission simulators, the Rear Crew Station, visual databases, the computer-generated forces system, and the Tactical Control Centre, the simulator network hub.  From 2000 to 2013, he managed the Tactical Control Centre at the MSHATF, responsible for operational and training scenario design, computer-generated forces programming, and networked collective training development and delivery.  

In addition to chairing the IPTA Helicopter Training Workstream, Gordon Woolley is an independent consultant, and an Associate of paladin:paradigm knowledge solutions, which is working to develop adaptive training solutions for a number of Canadian organisations.  He is a Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society, and a past chairman of the Society’s Flight Simulation Group Committee, for which he now acts as Business Manager.
