Lecture

This month’s Branch meeting which will be chaired by Dr David Lyon, and Des Underwood will deliver the lecture. This change followed advice from Lloyd Klee he needed to defer his planned lecture on Emergency Beacon Technology until a later date. Des was recently re-elected as Chair of the Bay of Plenty Branch and his recent work preparing some material for Peter Layne’s DC-3 Excursion Flight from Whakatane coincided with his discovery of an excellent book by Bruce McAllister, titled: ‘DC-3: A legend in Her Time - 75th Anniversary Photographic Tribute’ which sparked his interest in the on-going viability of the aircraft type. After reading the chapter on ‘Turboprop DC-3s’ and with his own experience of the DC-3 with the RNZAF and later the HS Andover CMk1, Des concluded the re-born DC-3’s merited a future lecture topic and set about expanding his research on the topic. This revealed an insight into the new lives of these venerable veterans of the sky following turbine engine conversions and differing levels of upgrade. The lecture will trace the various DC-3 turboprop conversions and focus on the Basler BT-67
