The lecture on 11 April was scheduled to be on the BAE146 Water Bomber and given by Dr Michael West of BAE Systems, Regional Aircraft Division. However Dr West now has to go into hospital for a planned procedure in the coming days and will not be available to give his lecture as planned. We plan to reschedule his lecture as part of the 2017/18 programme, which is currently in preparation.
Meanwhile we are extremely grateful to Air Cdre Bill Tyack, past chairman of Farnborough Branch and still a member of the committee, for stepping into the breach at short notice, with a presentation he happened to have in his back pocket. His talk, entitled ‘Snaps from a lifetime in Aviation’, will be a light-hearted canter through his career and his flying experiences as a serving officer in the RAF and more recently as light aircraft pilot. This will be a highly entertaining and informative lecture and a worthy substitute for the Water Bomber. The date will still be 11 April at the BAE Systems Park Centre. See the attached flier for further details.
Air Cdre Tyack joined the RAF in 1962 and qualified as a navigator, in which capacity he had operational tours firstly in a Shackleton squadron and subsequently on Canberras and Nimrods. He also spent four years flying trials at Boscombe Down. Other operational postings included as Wg Cdr in command of 51 Squadron and as Group Capt commanding RAF Wyton. In between these operational tours he flew several desks in the Ministry of Defence and then, on retirement from the RAF in 1999 he spent six years at QinetiQ. He claims to have been on a career break since 2006, during which he learned to fly and gained his PPL, although he has now thought it prudent to hang up his flying boots. He has however been heavily involved in RAeS governance as a Member of Council and during 2014/15 served as President of the Society. He is also a past Chairman of Farnborough Branch and remains an active member of the branch committee.
