Airbus Defense and Space has won a contract from the German Aerospace Center (DLR) to develop and build the German components for the German-French contribution to the German-French MERLIN (MEthane Remote sensing LIdar missioN) Earth observation satellite.

Jointly developed with the French space agency Center National d’Études Spatiales (CNES), the MERLIN mission is due to launch in 2021 and will use LIDAR (light detecting and ranging) equipment to monitor the methane content in Earth’s atmosphere and to create a global map of concentrations of this greenhouse gas.
