The lecture includes a short version of the story and process that led up to Equator Aircraft Norway SA and the P2 project being created, and the methods that were used to create the aircraft. Focus is placed on the Industrial Design methodology, how it differs from conventional aircraft design and how and why this thinking is believed to be necessary to create the aircraft of the future. Special attention is given to the conceptual design of the cockpit and how this can provide an easier interface system for the next generation of pilots. The Equator P2 aircraft concept is used as a backdrop for how this methodology comes out in practical terms, and information on the design itself was presented.

Tomas Broedreskift, Founder / Design Manager, Equator Aircraft
Tomas studied industrial design at the Oslo School of Architecture and Design and the University of Essen-Duisberg in Germany. Flying Cessnas and Pipers en route to a PPL in 2002 left him pondering on the complexities of flying and how existing aircraft exclude many people from the joy and practicality of flight. His next step was to create an aircraft concept in Germany in 2007, the SeaSTOL VLJ. This work led him to a self-made aircraft designer in Germany called Guenter Poeschel. Tomas completed an internship at Airbus in 2008. In 2009 Tomas returned to Oslo intending to re-create the old company as a Norwegian start up (Equator Aircraft Norway) to re-design the original P2 concept derived by Poeschel into a brand new experimental aircraft. As a first step this was done as a diploma project. This project used many open source resources, so the project was widely seen on the internet and many people joined the ‘cause’. In 2012 Equator received a grant from the Norwegian Government to create the hybrid engine system that was part of the concept. Outside Equator Aircraft, Tomas also works as a freelance Industrial Designer and Design Engineer at a research facility in Oslo.
