Captain Michel Gordillo has become the first pilot to circumnavigate both the North and South Poles in a homebuilt aircraft weighing under 1,750kg, as well as the only pilot to fly a single-engine aircraft across Antarctica.

Capt Gordillo is reported to have assembled his Sky Polaris Vans RV-8 in his garage in Madrid. During the 41,255nm flight, Gordillo used a specially fitted aerosols aethalometer to gather data on the build-up of black carbon in the Earth’s atmosphere in remote regions of the world.
