NASA has said that it may have to hand over the management of the Spitzer Space Telescope to an academic institution or private operator in 2019 due to a lack of funding.

Launched in 2003 on an initial five-year mission, the infrared observatory is moving further away from the Earth, masking communications more complicated. If outside funding was obtained, then Spitzer would be loaned to a private operator while NASA would retain ownership.
