In 2015 easyJet launched the Amy Johnson Flying Initiative with the aim of doubling the number of female new entrant pilots to 12% over two years. The initiative was really successful with over 600 applicants and so easyJet was able to achieve the 12% target in year one - recruiting 33 female new entrant pilots.
easyJet has now set itself a more stretching target of ensuring that 20% of new entrant cadet pilots recruited by easyJet in 2020 are female. Marnie and many of her fellow pilots at easyJet are going in to schools and working with youth organisations to encourage all young people, whether male or female, to consider a career in aviation. Aviation is now a more diverse industry, but the industry also needs to continue to show the opportunities it can offer and challenge the perceptions of who can be a pilot.
About the Speaker:
Capt Marnie Munns currently works as a commercial pilot for easyJet, flying the A320 series aircraft to a wide variety of European destinations. She started flying in 1994 whilst at University through the University Air Squadron. After completing her degrees in Psychology at University of Bristol and Cranfield University she applied to the airlines and successfully gained pilot sponsorship in 2000. Following pilot training with FTE Jerez she converted onto the B737 400/500 with Aer Lingus. The following year she joined excel Airways flying the B737NG to mainly charter destinations.
In 2006 she moved to easyJet as a direct entry Senior First Officer to fly the A320. By the end of 2007 she was promoted to Captain and has for the last 10 years been enjoying the variety that easyJet has to offer, being based both in Europe and London. Other roles she has undertaken during her flying career include Crew Resource Management instructor (CRMi) and when not flying she is working with easyJet on the Amy Johnson Flying Initiative.
