The 2015 Sopwith lecture was delivered by James Arbuthnot, former MP for East Hampshire and Chairman of the Defence Select Committee 2005 - 2014.

This RAeS Named Lecture was established in 1990 to honour Sir Thomas Sopwith CBE, Hon FRAeS. In the years prior to World War I, Sopwith became England’s premier aviator and established the first authoritative test pilot school in the world. He also founded England’s first major flight school. Between 1912 and 1920 Sopwith’s Company produced over 16,000 aircraft of 60 types.

About the speaker:

James Arbuthnot, Former MP for East Hampshire and Chairman of the Defence Select Committee 2005 - 2014 

James first entered Parliament in 1987 as MP for Wanstead & Woodford and since 1997 has represented North East Hampshire.
He served as Opposition Chief Whip (1997-2001) and as Shadow Secretary of State for Trade (2003-05), before becoming Chair of the House of Commons Defence Select Committee in 2005, a role he resigned in April 2014.
