On 7 April, the US launched 59 Tomahawk cruise missiles from two warships in the Mediterranean at the Syrian airbase of Shayrat.

The strike was in response to SyAAF aircraft from the airbase being identified as responsible for a suspected sarin gas airstrike on the town of Khan Sheikhoun that killed more than 80 people, including children on 4 April. The US Pentagon said that the strike was a 'proportional response' and that it had removed the means of delivery of chemical weapons.
